Top Picks:
Speed cubers are quite luck today that there are a couple of options when it comes to 4×4 speed cubes. A few years ago there was only 1 alternative to the really bad Rubik’s Cube brand [link] professor cube and that was the Eastsheen 4×4. The Eastsheen 4×4 is not a very good 4×4 speed cube but compared to the Rubik’s Cube brand Professor Cube, it was far better. There have been some speed cubers who modify and install springs in which make the Eashtsheen 4×4 much better for speed cubing. Fortunately, there are a number of really good 4×4 Speed Cubes available on the Market.
Shengshou 4×4
The Shengshou 4×4 was a very popular 4×4 Speed Cube and was used as the main 4×4 speed cube of many speed cubers. It was quite popular because it had really good performance at an affordable price. Before the Shengshou 4×4 there was only the V-Cube 4×4 which really performed well, but costs quite a bit. Although, some say it’s turning is slower than the V-cube 4, it has smooth and controllable turning which is a great feature for speed cubing. It incorporates an anti popping mechanism so pops are non existent with this speed cube. It’s only drawback is that it tends to lock up, small lock up can be manageable as you get more used to the feeling however it may totally lock up which will ruin your solve.

Yuxin 4×4
The Yuxin 4×4 is the newest 4×4 Speed Cube in the line up and comes from a new company. The Yuxin 4×4 at first feels quite light and fast but later on will feel more smooth which gives it quite a bit of control. What stands out with the Yuxin 4×4 is it’s corner cutting abilities. It does cut corners to a degree similar to other 4×4 Speed Cubes but does it with much more ease. Where little to no effort is needed to corner cut, this is the definition of corner cutting. Popping is no problem with the Yuxin but the drawback of the Yuxin 4×4 is that it really like to catch layers and get stuck. This may be attributed to the very loose feeling it has which will result in mis alignment of layer turns.

Moyu Aosu
The Moyu Aosu is the latest and greatest 4×4 Speed Cube of the Moyu Company. Before the Aosu there was the famous Moyu Weisu that had quite a bit of hype behind it which it certainly lived up to. From the Shengshou 4×4 to the Moyu Weisu, it easily replaced many speed cubers main 4×4 Speed Cube. The Moyu Aosu on the other hand is definitely an upgrade sharing all the good features of the Moyu Weisu but leaving out the Weisu’s flaws. The Moyu Aosu is very light and fast but still very controllable. It is a very good corner cutting 4×4 Speed Cube and coupled with very smooth turning it results in very consistent solves. Unlike the Moyu Weisu, it doesn’t have the weird internal popping problem but it will sometimes pop only during rough and imprecise layer turning.

Final Verdict
The Shengshou 4×4 has decent performance and it’s price tag really makes it stand out from the crowd. Being the Cheapest 4×4 Speed Cube in the line up the Shengshou 4×4 is good value for money. Although performance is what makes a good Speed Cube and performance wise the Shenshou 4×4 is at last place. Unlike the 3×3 top Speed Cubes there is an obvious 4×4 Speed Cube winner here and that is the Moyu Aosu. The Yuxin 4×4 is quite smooth and controllable with really good corner cutting but it’s problem with catching and locking really make it a deal breaker. This problem results in inconsistent Speed Solves and this is exactly what you don’t want in a Speed Cube.
The Moyu Aosu runs circles around its competition giving you a light and fast turning speed but still gives you total control. It’s only drawback is that it sometimes pops but you can completely eliminate this by accurate turning. The Moyu Aosu will ensure that you will get consistent speed solves every time.

Isn’t there a YJ Yusu?
yes
yes
guansu?
What do you mean by locks up and catches? Like, the Yuxin has great corner cutting, but locks up and catches. That sounds a bit contradictory…?
