          Pros

          • Super fast turning layers
          • Little to no effort turning layers
          • Stickerless version performs much better

          Cons

          • Very little control when executing layer turns
          • Corner cutting is inadequate
          • Spongy centers sometimes

Newisland is a relatively new speed cube company but has made quite an impression with their first speed cube the Phoenix which I reviewed earlier this year. The speed cube itself wasn’t all that exceptional to me although other users disagree because it had remarkable amazon reviews. This time Newisland has entered into the 4×4 speed cube category with their new Newisland Windstorm 4×4 speed cube.

The Windstorm comes with the very familiar blue pouch and unlike the 3×3 Phoenix which comes in a very nice white sturdy box the Windstorm comes in a softer brown box. This seems like cost cutting but it works great because it does come with extra stickers that other Newisland speed cubes don’t come with. Honestly, I would prefer extra stickers over a more flashy looking packaging, so well done Newisland.

newisland_windstorm_8Out of the box there are two things that instantly stands out with the Newisland Windstorm which was the very dry scratchy feeling and most importantly how fast the layers turn. I also really like how the stickers take up the whole space of the cubie unlike the Moyu Aosu which create large black gaps between stickers.

Both the stickered version and the stickerless are available which I both received however the stickerless version really performs much better then the stickered version. Stickerless versions of speed cubes are known to perform much better then the stickered version. Some say it may have to do with the plastic but nonetheless I personally think that the stickerless Windstorm is a much better speed cube so this is this review will be based on the stickerless version.

          Turning:

newisland_windstorm_10The Newisland Windstorm as it’s name suggest has layers that turn really fast. The characteristic which makes speed cubes have fast turning is that it has very little resistance between layers. Like with every fast turning speed cube executing algorithms can be done it lightning fast speed. Out of the box and after breaking in it has a distinct scratchy feeling with the layer turns which gives it some control which is really essential when you have a fast and light turning speed cube. The Inner layer is faster than the outer ones though which can be a bit of a problem during the 3×3 solve.

          Corner Cutting:

newisland_windstorm_13The Windstorm does have the ability to corner cut, while it’s enough it isn’t great either. Corner cutting on the Windstorm is somewhere just below “good” and right around “inadequate”. Corner cutting is there but is not enough. Solves will flow nicely when decent corner cutting is required but during those rough and rapid solves you will notice catching because the corner cutting didn’t quite cut it. Another indication of inadequate corner cutting is the occasional feeling of sponginess more in the center pieces which means it’s internal. The stickered version I found had much poorer corner cutting abilities which actually ruins the stickered version.

          Catching and Lock ups:

newisland_windstorm_2You can expect quite a lot of catching especially when you are new to the speed cube and still trying to get accustomed to it. Corner cutting is there to save you from some catching although due to the nature of the Windstorm of being fast and light catching is really something you will have to live with while using the Windstorm.

You can see lock ups when the cube is new, but after proper tensions and proper lubing you can’t find any lock ups with the Newisland Windstorm.

          Conclusion:

newisland_windstorm_21The best characteristic of the Newisland Windstorm 4×4 is definitely the fast layer turning. This fast layer turns is not that reckless because it has a scratchy and dry feeling with layer turns which gives it a little bit of resistance. This resistance gives you a bit of control which can give you really fast times. The 4×4 puzzle is not my favorite but I have broken my personal best single solve with the Windstorm.

Lock ups aren’t really that common with this 4×4 speed cube although you will see a lot of catching due to two characteristics that don’t work well together. Super fast and light layer turns and inadequate corner cutting is the perfect formula for layer to catch on each other.

It is quite unfortunate for the Newisland Windstorm because if the corner cutting was made to be “good” bordering “excellent” then this 4×4 speed cube would be an absolutely amazing speed cube. Although you can cut Newisland some slack because this is their first 4×4 speed cube in their product line. Improvements will be made and you can expect a better performing 4×4 speed cube from Newisland. For now, the Newisland Windstorm is a really fast 4×4 speed cube although since it does lack the very necessary control and has inadequate corner cutting, it is just a hair behind the top performing 4×4 speed cubes on the market.

Yes I got a stickerless one, it’s my favorite 4×4 puzzle, very fast turning.
